第一次遭遇外文书的首版问题,我指的是 first edition / first trade edition 的不同,后者这种版本是今天才第一次听说的。查了一下网上的说法,摘录到这里:

1.The first trade edition is the first edition that is sold to the public – the one found in stores. In many cases the first trade edition is the first edition. But sometimes publishers make special deals and sell specially signed and limited editions for friends of the publisher, friends of the author, or high end specialty publishers like the Easton Press. Quite often in those cases the first edition is considered to be the special signed/numbered edition, and the one sold in stores is called the first trade edition. [原文出处]

2.When a publisher applies the term “first trade edition” to a first printing copy of one of their books, they are signifying that the printing is the first copies being made available to the general public for purchase. The reason being is by applying the “first trade edition” term to the printing, they are signifying that a previously limited edition copy of the book has already been printed and published and distributed – usually as a short printing run of a series of numbered copies that may or may not be signed by the author exclusively for friends of the author or in some cases as premiums to club members of that particular publishing house. Generally these copies are not printed for the general public for purchase.

Therefore, these special short run printings would be considered the true first printings (or true first editions) and the “First Trade Editions”considered the first printing (or first editions) issued to the general public at large.[原文出处]
